Journey to Bethlehem – Joseph
I remember the first time I heard a recording of Joseph’s Song by Michael Card. When the music stopped, I sat stunned and overwhelmed with emotion. I never had considered the story from Joseph’s perspective. After all, God asked him to be the earthly father to the Son of God. How could it be?
The circumstances surrounding his engagement and marriage were both confusing and puzzling; and the events associated with the birth of his son were unique and miraculous. Throughout this perplexing situation, Joseph made decisions on scriptural principles.
First, Joseph based his decisions on what was best for Mary. When he learned that Mary was pregnant, and not by him, considered divorcing her quietly to avoid exposing her to public disgrace. instead, he remained with Mary despite the possible damage to his own reputation. Joseph put Mary’s best interest above his own hurt and disappointment.
Wise
- Joseph took his time to consider his alternatives before taking action.
- While weighing his options, an angel appeared to him in a dream.
- The angel told him to take Mary as his wife.
- The Holy Spirit had conceived the baby within her.
- He was to name him Jesus because he would save His people from sins.
- Everything that was happening was in fulfillment of prophecy.
Obedient
- Joseph woke up and did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him.
- He took Mary home as his wife.
Disciplined
- He had no union with Mary until after the birth of Jesus.
Conclusion:
Try to imagine the thoughts and feelings Joseph experienced as he went through these events. Given his actions, it’s easy to understand why God would select Joseph to father His son. Joseph was quite an individual!
Prayer:
“Lord, I so much want to be this kind of person. Please do whatever you need to so that I become more righteous, wise, obedient and disciplined. Amen”
