7 Habits of Highly Effective Christians #4

Habit 4: Balance

Verse: “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Matthew 20:28

Every four years I look forward to watching the summer Olympics. I especially enjoy watching the gymnastics competition; in particular I marvel at the grace, poise, and balance required on the balance beam. The event reminds me how important it is to practice balance in my life.

Bible: Jesus lived a balanced life. Although His schedule was filled with activity, He found time to serve individuals, the Twelve, and the crowd without neglecting His own needs. His balance life was achieved by continually growing in for key area of life.

Wisdom (intellectually): Jesus not only knew the Scriptures, He applied them to everyday situations. Here are just a few reactions to His wisdom:

  • “Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and answers.” (Luke 2:47)
  • “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching.” (Matthew 7:28)
  • “No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask Him any more questions.” (Matthew 22:46)

Stature (physically): The Bible never gives a description of Jesus; but we can surmise that He was physically fit. Prior to His public ministry, Jesus worked as a carpenter, a physically demanding profession. He walked long distances in rugged terrain, and often climbed mountains to pray.

Favor with God (spiritually): Twice God verbally blessed Jesus, the first to affirm His Son, and the second to authenticate His ministry to others.

  • “You are My Son, whom I love; with You I AM well pleased.” (Mark 1:11)
  • “This is My Son, whom I love; listen to Him!” (Mark 9:7)

Favor With Men (relationally): Jesus was the most charismatic Person who has ever lived. People were attracted to Him like a magnet.

  • Peter and James: “At once they left their nets and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:20)
  • John and Andrew: “Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him” (Matthew 4:22)
  • Matthew (sitting at his tax collector booth): “Levi (Matthew) got up, left everything and followed Him.” (Luke 5:28)

Application: Jesus balanced the competing demands on his time, attention and energy. Take a few minutes and evaluate how well you’re balancing your life:

Intellectually: Imbalanced – – – X – – – X – – – X – – – Balanced
Physically: Imbalanced – – – X – – – X – – – X – – – Balanced
Spiritually: Imbalanced – – – X – – – X – – – X – – – Balanced
Relationally: Imbalanced – – – X – – – X – – – X – – – Balanced

Prayer:
“Lord, life is hard. There are so many pressures, demands and stresses in my life. Show me how to live a balanced life like You did. Help me start today. Amen.”
