Audience: Who Do You Love? (Part 3: Types of Audiences)

Do you become energized when you’re around a certain group of people? For example, maybe you just love being around children.

Have you been heartbroken because someone was in pain? For instance, maybe you feel deep empathy when you’re around people who have lost a loved one.

Can you think of a time that your heart beat faster when a certain topic was discussed? An example is becoming incensed when you hear a story involving government corruption.

There’s a reason for your reaction. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” When God created you, He embedded within you a desire to serve others – a specific Audience.

There are two types of Audiences. The first one involves groups of people. Is there a group you enjoy being around? Do you want to help meet a need in their lives? Does your heart break when a group faces a difficult time? If so, your Audience may be that particular group of people.

The other type relates to social issues reflected in various social institutions. Do you see something broken in the world and want to help fix it? Is there something in society that you think could be made better? Do you see something wrong that needs to be made right? If so, your Audience may be that specific social institution.

The chart below summarizes these two types of Audiences.

So what’s your Audience? The next post will focus on groups of people as an Audience. The post after that will examine social issues as an Audience. After reading those posts you’ll have a better idea of  “the desires of your heart.”
