Possible Barriers to Purpose: Your Job #2

“Now, Discover Your Strengths,” by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, is a fascinating book based on a meta-analysis conducted by the Gallup Organization. They have asked one question of 1.7 million employees in 101 companies from 63 countries: “At work do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?”

What percentage would you guess answered “yes” to this question? The answer is startling. Globally, only 20% believe that they use their greatest strength at least once a day. Conversely, 80% of workers internationally never get to use their greatest strength at their workplace. Is it any wonder that so many people hate their jobs?

Imagine how much productivity is lost. Think about the degree of dissatisfaction and lack of personal fulfillment. It is a tragedy of tragic proportions. As I’ve taught seminars in the U.S. and other countries I can assure you that these statistics are true for Christians, too.

How would you answer the question? At work do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? Where do you fall – among the 20% or the 80%?

You were designed by God with specific strengths. He gave you these strengths because He knew you would need them to accomplish your purpose. Moreover, if you don’t use them at work, there isn’t a chance in the world that you will feel productive and fulfilled. Imagine coming to the end of your career knowing that you never did what you were designed to do.

Do you know what you do best? Perhaps it’s better to ask, “Do you know what your strengths are?” If not, I suggest you purchase the updated book: “StrengthsFinder 2.0” by Tom Rath, Gallup Press, 2007. Amazon has it available for $11.99. I have no affiliation with the authors, Gallup, or Amazon. I know from personal experience that the book and accompanying test are extremely worthwhile.

A second alternative is to take the Abilities Assessment developed by our organization, Designed to Serve. It is offered at no cost. If for some reason the above link doesn’t work, cut and paste the following in your browser: https://designedtoserve.orgresources/DtS+2010-02A+-+Abilities+Assessment.pdf

This is your one and only life. It is not a dress rehearsal and there are no second chances. Live the life that God meant for you to live. A big part of living a life well-lived is knowing and using your strengths to serve others on His behalf.
