Spiritual Gift Mix: Overview

I am not a cook. I eat whatever I can heat up in the microwave.  But I know many people who are terrific chefs. I always marvel at their ability to loosely follow a recipe and still whip up a gastronomic delight. Exceptional cooks put “a pinch of this and a dash of that” to create a masterful meal.

God is like that. When He created you He also put “a pinch of this and a dash of that” in your makeup. He gave you abilities, spiritual gifts, personality traits, and life experiences that He knew you would need to accomplish your calling.

You are a one of a kind creation of a creative God. You are as unique as a snowflake. There is no one like you who has ever been born – or ever will be. God gave you a unique mixture of assets in various combinations and specific quantities. In essence, your “one of a kind recipe” is what makes you … you.

God knew in advance that you would personally accept Christ as your Savior and Lord. Therefore, before you were born, He chose which spiritual gifts you would receive at the moment of salvation. Every Christian has at least one gift, and many believers have more than one. Not only were your gifts given to you on purpose, God determined the order of their spiritual impact on others. “Spiritual gift mix” is the term used for this unique blending.

Although God may give you whatever spiritual gifts He chooses, there are certain gifts that seem to go together. In fact, there are certain gifts that usually do not stand on their own; rather, these gifts tend to come alongside other gifts in a support role. These “support gifts” include discernment, faith, knowledge, and wisdom.  In the next few postings we’ll take a look at which support gifts tend to match up with which other gifts.
